China The Land & Its Peoples

-Photography Show

China has a remarkable continuity of a long history and its physical extent stretches over a large land mass of about 5,000 km east-west and 4,000 km north-south, from 154 meters under sea level in Turfan Depression to 8848 meters up on the peak of Qomolangma. China has the largest population and ethnically very divers people. There are 55 recognized ethnic minority groups and hundreds of unidentified tribes. They account for about 7% of the population and are spread over approximate 50% of the Chinese territory, mostly in the border regions and the hilly area of Southwest.

Paul was born a Chinese in colonial Hong Kong at the time China was getting into a series of deep political turmoil. After the cultural revolution China was still a mystery in the dark though gradually opening up to the outside world. In 1983 Paul began his journey of trying to understand his own culture and Chinese identity. Right from his first visit he started taking pictures which subsequently got published in books and magazines including the prestigious GEO magazine. Since then he has been traveling extensively throughout the country documenting ethnic minorities, folk culture, landscapes, wildlife and nature.

In this photography presentation, Paul will show you an overview of China with images collected from his journeys over the years when it was not so much affected by urbanization and the amazingly high degree of commodification.
