Butterfly Life Cycle & Foodplant – One & Two

lf-cethosia-biblis-3x3– Photography Show & Lecture

Butterfly life involves the complete metamorphosis process and the caterpillars normally feed only on one or a few particular species of foodplants. Since plants cannot run to escape, a special way to combat their eaters is to change their chemical contents. After a long time of evolution, many kinds of plants became inedible or poisonous. Meanwhile some butterflies have become adaptive to the poisonous foodplants that they could digest or tolerate certain plant chemicals. In this photo presentation this relationship between butterfly life cycles and plant species will be illustrated. Different groups of plants and particular groups of butterfly species will be grouped together. Besides, the food preference of the adult butterflies will also be featured.

Show One

The first show starts with those more common and large caterpillars of Swallowtails and the plant families such as Birthwort family, Custard Apple Family, Laurel family, Magnolia Family and Rue/Citrus family. Life cycles of other butterfly families and their corresponding foodplants will also be featured. It includes the Tigers and Crows, Duffer and Faun, Judies and Punches, Skippers, and the Whites and Yellows.

Show Two

In this presentation the Nymphs are the main butterfly family featured. They are a very large and diverse group. Caterpillars are feeding on a large numbers of plants such as Violet, Ramie, Figs, Parasitic Plants, Legume/Pea/Bean, Mango, Honeysuckles, Mimosoideae and Acanthaceae/Acanthus Family. Life cycles of other butterfly families and their corresponding foodplants will also be illustrated. It includes the Blues, Browns and Satyrs.
