Tin Hau Festivals Of Hong Kong

-Photography Show & Lecture

Tin Hau is one of the most popular deities in South China. The meaning of Tin Hau is heavenly empress which is one of her many imperial titles given by emperors in old China. Although Tin Hau is a sea goddess but worshipers are not only from fishing communities. Tin Hau is also worshiped in many temples which are devoted to other deities. The diminishing fishing industry and the integration of fishing population into urban area have greatly reduced Tin Hau festival celebrations. However among our 100 plus Tin Hau temples, at least 25 of them are still active in annual celebration. Getting near the festival day, a gigantic opera theatre will be constructed with bamboo, logs and metal sheets, usually right in front of the temple for Tin Hau’s best viewing. Many of the Tin Hau temples are located near the shores around Hong Kong. In the morning of the main festival day, fishing boats decorated with colorful flags will come out from typhoon shelters, sailing towards different directions to one of the Tin Hau temples they used to worship once every year.
